About: Due to its ideal location next to expensive hotels and in the well-liked North Naples neighborhood, Vanderbilt Beach Park is one of the most visited beach access points. Vanderbilt Beach has plenty of room for everyone, stunning white sand surroundings, sea oats, and restrooms. This well-known beach has enough of sand and sun for everyone throughout the busiest times of the year, which are January through March.

About: At the west end of 12th Avenue South, on the Gulf of Mexico, is the historic Naples Pier. One of the most popular spots for tourists is the Naples Pier. The Pier has ADA beach access mats, showers, restrooms, and a concession shop with beach supplies and a covered dining area. Just up 12th Avenue is Tommy Bahama Restaurant, Bar & Store. Beware, there is limited parking, just check out the google map here.

HISTORY OF NAPLES BEACH AND VANDERBILT BEACH

Naples Beach and Vanderbilt Beach are two of Southwest Florida’s most iconic coastal destinations, located along the Gulf of Mexico in Collier County. Their history reflects a fascinating blend of pioneer spirit, railroad expansion, Old Florida charm, and luxury development.

 

NAPLES BEACH: HISTORY OVERVIEW

Early Inhabitants

The Calusa Indians, known as the "Shell People," inhabited the Naples area for over 2,000 years, thriving on fishing and shell mounding.

 

Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s, but development remained sparse for centuries.

 

19th Century: Wilderness & Vision

In the late 1800s, Kentucky businessman Walter N. Haldeman and associates bought land along the Gulf coast with the dream of building a resort town.

 

Inspired by reports that the bay’s climate and beauty rivaled Naples, Italy, the developers chose the name Naples.

 

In 1888, they built the Naples Hotel and a 500-foot pier, which attracted visitors arriving by boat.

 

Early 1900s: Isolation and Growth

Naples remained small and remote for decades due to limited access.

 

In the 1920s, the Seaboard Air Line Railway extended service closer to the area, sparking slow growth.

 

Barron Collier, for whom the county is named, played a major role in regional development, pushing for infrastructure like Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41).

 

Post-War Boom (1940s–1960s)

After WWII, Naples gained popularity as a winter escape for wealthy Northerners.

 

Beachfront development increased, and the area became known for sunsets, fishing, and Old Florida resorts.

 

Modern Naples Beach

Naples Beach now features:

  • Iconic beachfront resorts like the former Naples Beach Hotel

VANDERBILT BEACH: HISTORY OVERVIEW

Early 20th Century Origins

The area now known as Vanderbilt Beach was largely untouched mangrove swampland throughout the early 1900s.

 

It gained attention in the mid-20th century, named (somewhat romantically) after the Vanderbilt family, though there is no evidence that any Vanderbilts ever lived or invested there.

 

Development Begins (1950s–1970s)

The late 1950s and '60s saw canal dredging and land development to create beachfront and canal-front homes.

 

Development was led by local investors and real estate developers hoping to attract affluent seasonal residents.

 

The area offered boating access, pristine beaches, and proximity to North Naples and Bonita Springs.

 

Growth and Luxury (1980s–Present)

Vanderbilt Beach quickly became a luxury enclave with high-rise condos and resorts.
